Headlines, Blurbs & Captions - Best Practices
- In the digital
world, headlines, blurbs and captions are more important than ever before.
- Justify every
pixel; make every word count.
- Don't sacrifice
quality or accuracy for speed.
- Imagine the
words displayed on a RSS reader, Blackberry dislay, e-mail inbox.
Do they grab you? Are they compelling?
- Label everything.
Where are you taking me? What will happen when I get there? If multimedia
is going to launch, let me know.
- Be as specific
as you need to be to convey the location and background of the story.
- Don't forget
the credits!
- Chip Scanlan
talks about telling your story in six words. Great exercise for the web, too.
For an
exercise, see these award-winning print headlines - how would they be different
on the web than in print?
