Sree's Thoughts on Digital Camcorders
Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002

If you're thinking of buying a video camera, I would strongly suggest going digital. Many of us remember the old style home video cameras, which were two large pieces: A large shoulder camera and a separate, large video recorder. Now, of course, the cameras have become as small as paperback books.

Here are some reasons to go digital:

  • The quality of the images are much better than the older analog format.
  • Most cameras allow you to take digital still photos as well - though the quality of these photos might be less than those made by pure digital still cameras.
  • The resulting video can be easily dumped into your computer for video editing, without having to first converting it into a format the computer can understand.

Here are three digital cameras we looked at on my TV segment:

  • SONY PC101- $800
  • PANASONIC PV-DC 252 - $600
  • SHARP VIEWCAM - $1,000
