For
about two weeks now, I have been test-riding a new high-tech
bicycle. Most of you might be wondering how high-tech could
a bike get anyway? The answer: with the new Iacocca Folding
E-Bike, pretty hig-tech, actually.
Yes,
that's Lee Iacocca of Chrysler cars fame, who has gone into
the bike business. His new cycle is a folding, five-gear bike
that also happens to be battery powered. The battery, which
connects to any standard power outlet, can be removed easily
from the bike. Charge it for two hours and you get about two
hours of non-pedal travel. If you pedal, it extends the life
of the battery, though pedaling does not charge the battery
itself. The cycle has a top speed of about 15 miles per hour.
The
bike's big New York City selling point is that it folds into
half its siye, allowing it to fit into a NYC elevator and
actually be stored in my apartment.
The
bike costs about $1,400 and is available for purchase from
BigPlanet.com
-- though currently it's on back order.
As
somone who doesn't own a bike, cycling around was a lot of
fun. The battery power came in especially handy when trying
to get out of a tight jam between speeding taxis.
One
more thing: It comes in the shiny yellow you see here (and
which I rode around the streets of Manhattan in) and in red
and black.
