Sree's Thoughts on Homework Helpers
Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002

Even as a debate takes place across the country about homework and its worthiness, the fact remains that there's still a lot that the kids are going to be bringing home starting this week. And that means a lot of parents are going to be sweating as they try to grasp the complicated topics that kids of all ages seem to be studying these days.

The Internet is a good place to go, of course, and I wanted to give you a couple of useful sites to start your search. Keep in mind that these are only meant to be STARTING points, and once you explore them, you will find ones you will stick to. If you find others you like, let me know.

  • Kidsource.com: This site is provides mainly children-related health information, but it's homework calendar is something that parents should try. It helps children get back into the swing of doing homework.
  • Infoplease Homework Center: Information Please, the venerable publisher of almanacs, has an excellent Web site for homework help in a variety of topics. Several good features here, including one that allows you to plug in a year and it gives you world events and other information for that year.
  • BJ Pinchbeck's Homework Helper: This site, by 15-year-old BJ Pinchbeck, is one of the most useful sites on the Web. His site is now hosted by Discovery.com, and has more than 700 links, all annotated. In typically modest teenage fashion, he declares: If you can't find it here, you just can't find it. He's probably right.

This is one of the best sites for parents, grandparents and, yes, even kids to learn about the Internet and how it works. Lots of useful background information, tips, etc. It's divided into sections such as: Getting Started, Safe Surfing, Viruses Locating Software, Newsgroups, File Sharing, Goodies.
