Napster's
back, baby, and
this time, it's legal. Roxio,
the big maker of CD burning and other software, bought the rights
to the Napster name for $5 million and is launching a legit service
this Thursday at 10 a.m. EST.
While
some of the details are still under wraps, here's what is known.
The service is going to have 500,000 songs (far more than the
Apple iTunes'
200,000). They will charge about a $1 a song or a monthly fee
for an unlimited number of downloads.
Once
the site is launched, I will test it and report back on its quality.
In the meantime, Roxio is using the PressPlay service as the backbone
of its new service (PressPlay was shut down on Tuesday to prep
for the Napster launch).
The
Napster name should encourage a lot of people to try the service,
but we'll have to see if it makes a dent in the amount of unpaid
music sharing that goes on.
